Enugu East should produce governor in 2023, Nwobodo, others demand
The people of Enugu East Senatorial District of Enugu State have told Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi that it is their turn to produce the state’s number one citizen.
In that spirit, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has zoned its 2023 governorship candidate to the district.
Political and religious leaders, as well as traditional institutions from the zone, converged yesterday at Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, for a mega rally, requesting Ugwuanyi to uphold the long-established rotational template with regard to the office of the governor by supporting the district to produce his successor.
At the rally former governor of old Anambra State, Jim Nwobodo expressed optimism that Ugwuanyi would endorse his successor from the zone.
Nwobodo, who represented Enugu East in the Senate, added: “Gburugburu is a peace-maker; he entrusted Enugu to the hand of God; he will give Ndi Enugu East governor in 2023. We are only waiting for the time to come to know who will be the next governor from our zone.”
Convener of the well-attended rally themed ‘Oganiru Enugu East Senatorial District’, and Speaker of the House of Assembly, Edward Ubosi, said the only agendum of the gathering was to demand the governorship seat of the state in 2023 in the spirit of equity, fairness and justice.
Aligning with the Speaker, APC chairman in Enugu, Dr. Ben Nwoye, announced that the party had zoned its governorship position in 2023 to Enugu East.
The APC chairman emphasised that the governor’s presence at the rally was a prayer answered towards the quest for his successor to come from Enugu East.
“We (APC) have zoned the governorship candidate to Enugu East. We are following the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to beg you to also nominate and zone their governorship candidate to Enugu East.
“So, Your Excellency, you will do the right thing. You will anoint someone from Enugu East; if it goes to APC, you anoint someone from APC; if it goes to PDP, you anoint someone from PDP,” Nwoye said.
