FG orders probe into alleged crimes at Delta’s Okere Correctional Centre

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo

The Federal Government has ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into recent allegations of inmates sneaking out to carry out robberies aided by prison officials.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, gave the directive following media reports that an armed robbery in Benin, Edo State, had been traced to inmates in the custodial centre. He stated that anyone found guilty of the act would not be spared.

The minister, who condemned the alleged act in a statement yesterday in Abuja, said that any form of indiscipline, misconduct, or reprehensible behaviour would be met with severe consequences.

“I will not allow indiscipline to fester under my nose. Any officer found wanting will face the full weight of the law. The leadership of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) must provide explanations,” Tunji-Ojo stated.

The minister reiterated his commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the administration of justice within the correctional service system.

“We take these allegations seriously and will not tolerate any form of misconduct within our correctional facilities,” he added.

He also called on the general public to provide any relevant information that may aid in the investigation.
