ActionAid Country Director, Ojobo Atuluku

Of the N1.3 trillion budgeted for the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP) between 2016 and 2018, only N463.3 billion (about 35.6 per cent) was released, ActionAid Nigeria has said.

The non-governmental organisation disclosed that a document it obtained from the Ministry of Budget and National Planning revealed that in 2016, of the N500 billion appropriated, N80.14 billion was released; N155 billion released out of N400 billion in 2017; while N228.15 billion was released out of N400 billion in 2018.

The country director, Ene Obi, during the launch of the 2018 Third Party Monitoring Report of the NSIP in Abuja, yesterday, said many Nigerians would have been lifted out of poverty if the entire money voted for the programme was released.

According to her, the inadequate funding of the social protection scheme denied the programme the maximum impact it could have made.
