The Cross River State Government has deployed a swamp buggy to the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) Staff Quarters to clear blocked waterways and drainage channels following flooding caused by recent heavy rainfall in Calabar.

The flooding affected parts of the residential quarters, with some buildings and household properties reportedly impacted by the rising water.

The Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Prof. Francisca Bassey, accompanied by members of the university management, visited the affected areas to assess the situation and interact with residents.

During the visit, the swamp buggy deployed by the state government was being used to clear blocked waterways, desilt drainage channels and create wider passages for stormwater to flow.

Bassey expressed concern over the impact of the flooding on staff and their families, particularly those whose homes and belongings were affected.

She said regular maintenance of drainage channels and waterways was necessary to reduce the recurrence of flooding in the quarters.

The Vice Chancellor said the university management would explore measures for periodic desilting of major drainage channels and natural waterways, particularly during the rainy season.

She also said the university would continue to work with the state government and other relevant stakeholders to address environmental challenges affecting the university community.

Some residents of the affected areas expressed appreciation for the intervention, saying the clearing of the blocked waterways would help improve drainage and reduce the impact of subsequent rainfall.
