In recognition of their outstanding contributions to the development of the nation, Dr. Alexander Thomopulos, Prof. Itse Sagay and 98 others were recently honoured by the Government College Ughelli Old Boys’ Association, Lagos Branch (GCUOBA-LAG.)

President of the association, Clement Djebah, said old boys of the college gather every year to celebrate their alma mater, the GCU brand.

“The GCU brand is one, which we proudly wear as an identity, not just as an insignia on our chest, but also as a culture that has become a part of us.

GCUOBA’s yearly luncheon is celebrated in various branches where old boys are, such as Warri, Ughelli, Sapele, Benin City, United Kingdom, and United States of America.

“It gives old boys the opportunity to meet and reminisce about our days together in school, review our achievement plans for the future, including efforts to inject resources to help our school. This year is, particularly, special because other than the dinner, we are celebrating some of our members, who have made us proud students of GCU.

“The challenge of the government in financing education is enormous. We, therefore, cannot sit back with arms folded; we have to do the little we can to keep the school in good shape for future generations. Presently, the metal and wood workshops are dilapidated. We enjoin members collectively or individually to take this up as a project that require our urgent intervention,” he said.

In an interview, Sagay expressed happiness with the programme. He also urged Nigerians to exercise patience with President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, insisting that Nigerians would soon enjoy the dividends of democracy.
