Medical experts from Integromed Germany have begun technical engagements with the Heartland Hospitals Management Corporation (HHMC) as part of efforts to strengthen hospital operations and healthcare delivery in Imo State.

The German delegation, led by the Managing Director of Integromed Germany, Dr Soliman Ibrahim, was received at the HHMC headquarters in Owerri by the corporation’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Emmanuel Ogueri, and members of the management team.

The discussions focused on technical support, specialised healthcare training, medical equipment management and maintenance, fire safety, infection prevention and control, as well as measures to improve hospital processes.

The HHMC management and the visiting German team later joined Governor Hope Uzodinma at Heartland Specialist Hospital, Owerri, where they inspected ongoing works at the facility.

The engagement followed a meeting between the German delegation and Uzodinma on Monday, during which both sides discussed the use of international expertise, knowledge transfer and capacity building to improve healthcare services in the state.

Under the proposed partnership, German experts are expected to support HHMC in training doctors, nurses, other medical personnel and clinical trainers.

An initial pilot programme is expected to cover five hospitals, with training and technical assistance focusing on hospital efficiency, emergency care, patient flow, clinical services and equipment management.

The programme is also intended to strengthen the ability of local healthcare workers to operate and maintain medical equipment while improving systems for delivering services within participating hospitals.

Speaking during the engagement, Uzodinma said professional operational management was necessary to ensure that investments in healthcare infrastructure translated into effective services.

The governor also expressed an ambition for the state to eventually develop capacity for local production of medical equipment.

“Our hope, at the end of the day, is to begin to even manufacture medical equipment in Imo State,” Uzodinma said.

Ogueri pledged the corporation’s cooperation with the German team, saying the partnership could help strengthen the management of healthcare facilities and improve the use of infrastructure being developed across the state.

He said technical expertise and capacity building would be important to ensuring that investments in hospitals resulted in improved service delivery and patient care.

The collaboration comes amid a broader programme of healthcare infrastructure development in Imo State.

The state government is undertaking the construction and reconstruction of General Hospitals and expansion of primary healthcare facilities, while also seeking to strengthen health insurance coverage and pharmaceutical supply through the Heartland Central Drug Store.

The government has also announced plans to expand specialised medical services in the state, including advanced surgical care.

HHMC said the partnership with Integromed Germany is expected to strengthen local technical expertise and reduce gaps in hospital operations and equipment management.

The state government hopes that improvements in healthcare infrastructure, specialist services and professional capacity will eventually reduce the need for some residents to seek medical treatment outside the state and strengthen Imo’s position as a healthcare destination.
