Group commends Buhari over commitment to free, fair elections

Initiative for Leadership Development and Change (ILDC), an NGO, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari over his pledge to ensure free and fair 2023 general elections.

Chief Ugochukwu Nnam, the President of the NGO, gave the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.

NAN recalls that in an address at United Nations General Assembly recently Buhari promised the commitment of his administration to supervise credible polls in 2023.

“I have set the goal that one of the enduring legacies I would like to leave is to entrench a process of free, fair and transparent and credible elections,” he said.

Nnam, who lauded the president’s democratic stance, said that an impartial and credible election would not only restore confidence in the people but would also renew hope for national prosperity.

“Nigerians are very happy with President Buhari over his decision to support free and fair elections in 2023.

“It will go long way in giving the people the right and true power to select their choice of leadership which will restore hope and national revival to all,” he said.

Nnam, who blamed bad governance on imposition of leadership on the people by political parties, said a credible election was key to economic and political revival and stability.

According to him, people will hold their leaders accountable if they are truly elected not when they owe their allegiance to godfathers.

He reiterated the group’s determination to continue to support good governance by promoting and upholding the tenets of democracy in Nigeria.

Nnam advised politicians not to sabotage the Buhari’s efforts by indulging in actions capable of undermining the nation’s democracy.

He also called on INEC to be neutral in the conduct elections to reflect Buhari’s democratic disposition.
