Gunmen abduct corpse, bearers in Enugu, demand N50m ransom
Gunmen have abducted the remains of the late Ugwuanyi Israel and family members conveying his corpse from Lagos to Nsukka in Enugu State.
The late Israel, who hailed from Ameze Owerre, Umabor community, Nsukka Local Council of Enugu, died in Lagos.
The family members had been taking his body home when kidnappers swooped on them. All the people bearing the corpse and the driver were abducted.
A family source said: “They were on their way home from Lagos, on Sunday, when the vehicle carrying his body was halted by kidnappers. People in the vehicle, alongside the driver, were all abducted at Umuoka, Udi Local Council of Enugu State.
“The kidnappers have called the family and demanded N50 million ransom. We spent all we had during his illness. We don’t know where to raise such money. I am pleading with those holding our people captive to exercise mercy and release them. This is really a trying time for us.”
The police were yet to comment on the incident as at press time.
