The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State police command, Imohimi Edgal, has accused highly placed politicians of sponsoring cult activities in the state. Edgal said the police were becoming worried about the activities of cultist during political rallies, warning that politicians were flouting the ban on campaigns by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as they engage in political rallies under the guise of thank you parties.

He said cultism had taken a frightening trend with last week’s incidence at Ikorodu Road where 23 suspects were arrested and have been charged to Yaba magistrate court. They have been remanded in prison custody.

Edgal, who spoke at a town hall meeting on security at Lagos Island, said a notable and successful aspirant in the just concluded primaries, has been invited for questioning on why cultists took over a get-together he organised last week, warning that political rallies remained banned till the date INEC fixed for its lifting.

He said: “The interim investigation report submitted to me by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Yaba, Panti, stated clearly that a politician decided to call for a thank you political gathering somewhere in Ikororu Road and in the process cultists hijacked the gathering leading to mayhem. As I speak to you, he has sent in a letter to the DCP that he is hospitalized and the IPO has gone to see him on his hospital bed.”

Our prayer for him is that he gets well very soon so that he can avail himself in court to state his own side and defend himself. “Lagos is known for political tolerance, Lagos is a cosmopolitan state and an elite environment, so there is no room for thuggery. I am calling on politicians to abide by the rules. INEC has made it clear that any form of campaigns or political activities is not allowed for presidency and National Assembly until November 18, while governorship campaigns begin December 2 and not before. So any persons or group must be patient. Political activities should not commence under any guise before the scheduled dates.
