The United States and Lagos State are set to deepen economic and diplomatic cooperation, with the new U.S. Consul General in Lagos, Brenden Hudspeth, and Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu identifying trade, investment, technology and the creative economy as key areas for stronger partnership.

Hudspeth, who recently returned to Lagos for a fresh diplomatic assignment, described the city as a rapidly transforming economic and cultural powerhouse, saying the scale of development he encountered on his return reinforced his conviction that the opportunities available in Lagos were virtually unlimited.

Speaking at a reception hosted in his honour in Lagos, August 27, Hudspeth said his return to Lagos had given him an opportunity to witness first-hand the dramatic changes that had taken place since his previous assignment in the city.

The diplomat, who previously served in Lagos between 2020 and 2022 as Chief of the Political-Economic Section of the U.S. Consulate, recalled that his latest arrival presented him with a markedly different city.

“I get into the car, and I ask the driver, ‘About how long is the drive?’ and he says, ‘30 minutes’” he said, describing his journey from the airport.

According to him, the development he witnessed along the route, including a new airport terminal under construction and the emergence of restaurants, institutions and other establishments, demonstrated the pace and dynamism of Lagos.

“I see all kinds of restaurants, institutions, and establishments that seem to just come out of the ground, like a tree symbolic of the vibe that is this city. And you can tell that many things have changed,” he said.

For Hudspeth, however, the transformation of Lagos extends beyond physical infrastructure. He singled out the city’s creative economy as another area with enormous potential for international collaboration and investment.

“From Nollywood to Afrobeats to fashion, arts, food, culture, sports, design – talent is simply pouring out of this city,” he said.

Having travelled across six continents, the diplomat described Lagos as “the frontier cultural powerhouse,” underscoring the city’s growing influence in shaping global popular culture.

His remarks came against the backdrop of a broader call by Governor Sanwo-Olu for a more practical and mutually beneficial Lagos-U.S. relationship, particularly in areas capable of generating investment, jobs, innovation and opportunities for young people.

Sanwo-Olu said Hudspeth’s previous experience in Lagos placed him in a unique position to understand both the city’s character and its evolving economic potential.

“It is a special pleasure to welcome you back to Lagos. This is not your first time in our city, and that matters,” the governor said.

In his address delivered by the Secreatry to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Sanwo-Olu noted that Hudspeth’s earlier posting coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, when Lagos, like cities around the world, faced unprecedented disruption and uncertainty.

“You therefore return to a city you already know, but also to a city that has changed. And I believe that gives this new chapter of your assignment a particularly promising beginning,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor said Lagos’ entrepreneurial culture, technological ecosystem and creative industries offered significant opportunities for closer engagement with the United States, but stressed that the relationship must move beyond diplomatic goodwill to concrete economic outcomes.

“For us in Lagos, the opportunity is to move beyond a relationship that is already strong and make it even more practical, productive and mutually beneficial,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu outlined several areas where he expected the relationship to produce tangible results, including greater access for Lagos businesses to American markets, increased American investment in Lagos, technology and innovation partnerships, and stronger connections between the creative industries of both economies.

He also identified the need to address structural obstacles that could constrain the realisation of those opportunities.

According to him, the partnership should encompass efforts to improve the ease of doing business, strengthen intellectual property protection, facilitate legitimate mobility and skills exchange, and create easier channels for entrepreneurs, investors and creative professionals to connect across the two economies.

“These are practical issues, but they have strategic consequences,” the governor said.

He added that Lagos was continuing to position itself as a centre of enterprise, technology, culture and investment under the state’s THEMES+ development agenda, with the objective of making the city more competitive, inclusive and better integrated into the global economy.

Sanwo-Olu pledged the state’s readiness to work with Hudspeth and the U.S. Consulate to translate the shared vision into partnerships capable of creating jobs, expanding markets and supporting innovation.

“We look forward to working closely with you and your team, not simply in the language of diplomacy, but through concrete partnerships that create jobs, expand markets, support innovation and give our young people greater access to opportunity,” he said.

The governor also used the occasion to acknowledge the contribution of Hudspeth’s predecessor, Consul General Rick Swart, praising his engagement with Lagos and wishing him well following his retirement from the U.S. Foreign Service.

Hudspeth, in turn, expressed appreciation for the reception accorded him and his family, describing his return to Lagos as an “unimaginable” experience.

He particularly acknowledged the presence of representatives of American companies at the reception, saying their participation reflected more than commercial interest.

“Your presence reflects more than just business interest, but a shared investment in our community and collective mutual progress,” he said.

The diplomat said he looked forward to collaborating with the Lagos State Government, the business community and other stakeholders during his tenure.
