The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has warned against any act by personnel capable of sabotaging efforts at securing custodial facilities in the country, saying that such will not be tolerated.
He gave the warning while on an inspection tour of the national headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) and the Kuje Medium Custodial Center, in Abuja.
Tunji-Ojo noted that even though jail breaks have not been recorded in recent times, there have been a series of attacks on custodial centers by external elements and the prevailing challenge of overcrowding in the centers.
He said, “We are ready to show the door to whoever wants to sabotage us.
“We can only build on the foundation of your efforts, we are ready to collaborate with you to make sure that our correctional centers do become correctional centers indeed and we are ready to activate non-custodial responsibility according to the law.
“We will continue to partner with the ministry of justice to look at the issue of decongesting our custodial centers and we have to be creative about it.”
The Minister said he was at the Ministry to implement the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda of President Bola Tinubu and would not allow anyone to sabotage his efforts.
While promising reforms that will uplift the institution, he assured of government’s commitment to make the service “a correctional institution rather than a condemnation service.”
