Kaduna court orders journalist remanded in prison custody

A High Court in Kaduna yesterday ordered a former correspondent with Vanguard Newspapers, Mr. Luka Binniyat to be remanded in prison.

A High Court in Kaduna yesterday ordered a former correspondent with Vanguard Newspapers, Mr. Luka Binniyat to be remanded in prison.

He was remanded over alleged false publication brought against him by the Kaduna State Government.

Justice Bashir Sukola ordered the remand after counsel to the journalist, Mr. James Kanyip made his final submission to the court.

Binniyat, who appeared in the courtroom in crutches, having survived an accident recently, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The judge adjourned the matter till July 20, 2017, pending the determination of the bail application filed by his lawyer.

The state government had taken Binniyat to court on a two-count charge, bothering on a publication in Vanguard Newspaper of January 22, 2017, which alleged the killings of five students of the College of Education, Gidan-Waya.

He was subsequently charged for a breach of public peace and injurious falsehood, punishable under sections 114 and 393 of the Penal Code Laws of Kaduna State.
