Kogi government, NULGE disagree over percentage of salaries

Kogi State government and the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) have disagreed over what percentage of salaries has been paid to council workers.

The disagreement arose yesterday at the Government House, when NULGE countered government claims that it has been paying local government workers over 50 percent salaries. It was like leaking a fraud being perpetrated at the local governments, as NULGE leadership punctured the claims to the consternation of government representatives who had false information from the local governments.

Chief of Staff to Kogi State Governor, Edward Onoja, had made the disclosure, while addressing labour leaders after a peaceful protest in Lokoja. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Medical and Health workers Union (MHWUN), and National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) participated in the protest over the N30, 000 new minimum wage.

The statement did not go down well with the workers, as they chanted “No No! It is propaganda.”Onoja, while explaining further to buttress his claim said: “Is there a NULGE representative here? Please we are before the world and are not here to joke. We must read out some information so that when they say what the money is used for, you will compare today and yesterday.

He told the NULGE chairman that there is a directive that no local government should pay below 50 per cent, no matter what. When the President of NULGE, Kogi State chapter, Tade Adeyemi, spoke, he rebuffed the claims of the Chief of Staff, saying “workers have been receiving 25- 30 per cent salaries in the last six months, despite agreement that no local government should receive less than 54 per cent.”

But, in a counter move, the Chief of Staff responded that the Director of Local Government and Treasurers had confirmed to the government, with relevant records, that they have been paying 50 per cent and above.
