The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this at Ilubirin after a tour of Lagos Island and environs, adding that the urban renewal project is necessary to effectively address the problem of flooding, which had posed serious threat to lives and properties in the area.
The commissioner, accompanied by the Special Adviser on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu; Special Adviser Office of Infrastructure, Olufemi Daramola; Permanent Secretary, Office of Infrastructure, Lateef Somide; Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services, Mahamood Adegbite and some directors from the Ministry, explained that the project will be carried out jointly by the ministry and the Ministry of Work and Infrastructure.
“We want to have a holistic approach which requires the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources to sign off some alignments because of the planned regeneration of the total infrastructure of Lagos Island,” he said.
He said the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources would re-construct 13 secondary collectors, two drainage outfalls and upgrade some drainage channels while the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure would construct the roads.
Wahab, who said the projects would go on at the same time, stressed that the sign off requires a joint agreement with the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure on the drainage level, the alignments, the collector, outfall, the depth and width of each of the channels to make the project beneficial to the community.
He mentioned the collectors drains to be reconstructed to include Jakara Collector Drain, Oroyinyin Collector Drain, Ojogiwa Collector Drain, Binuyo Collector Drain, Olusi/ Odunfa Collector Drain, Omidundun Collector Drain, Epe Collector Drain, Thomas Collector Drain, Sangrose/Mandilas Collector Drain, Odulami Collector Drain, Salvage/Elegbate Collector Drain, Amuto Collector Drain and Iga Iduganran Collector Drain.
The Special adviser on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, appealed to residents of Lagos Island to bear with the government when the project commences, saying achieving these projects may come with some pains but it will be beneficial to all residents in the long run.
