The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has intensified its Lagos State School Traffic Safety Advocacy Programme (LSTSAP) for schoolchildren across the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, announced this in a statement on Monday in Lagos.

The statement was signed by Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at LASTMA.

Giwa noted that the programme, introduced under the visionary initiative ‘Operation Catch Them Young’, aims to instil traffic discipline and awareness in children from an early age.

“This well-structured initiative fosters a deep understanding of road safety principles while reducing traffic-related risks.

“The recently re-launched programme has been revitalised to enhance its reach and overall impact,” he said.

LASTMA officials systematically engage secondary school students across Lagos State’s six educational districts, equipping them with essential knowledge of traffic signs, regulations, and safety protocols every Wednesday.

Giwa reiterated that embedding traffic awareness in young minds is crucial for fostering a disciplined and law-abiding society.

He stressed that early exposure to road safety not only improves pedestrian and commuter safety but also nurtures responsible future drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

According to him, revitalising ‘Operation Catch Them Young’ aligns with the state government’s commitment to a safer and more structured transportation system.

“By equipping students with essential traffic knowledge, Lagos State is shaping a future where road safety awareness becomes second nature.

“The programme’s extensive rollout across schools will leave a lasting impact, promoting a culture of responsible road use from the grassroots,” Giwa stated.

To enhance engagement, the initiative includes excursions, career day events, interactive road safety games, essay competitions, and outreach programmes for students with special needs.
