A team of applied mathematics researchers, led by Dr. Adejimi Adeniji, has introduced the JAPA Model, a sophisticated mathematical framework designed to address the ongoing brain drain affecting Nigeria and other African nations. As skilled professionals continue to emigrate, Nigeria has experienced significant losses in critical sectors such as healthcare, engineering, and education.

The JAPA Model incorporates key factors like local opportunities, population dynamics, and returnee rates to provide a nuanced understanding of migration patterns. Dr. Adeniji’s team explained that unfavorable local conditions compel many Nigerians to leave or aspire to leave the country, often for social and economic reasons.

According to Dr. Adeniji, “The migration trend from African countries shows that with the right policies and sustained improvements, we can reverse brain drain, to make it brain gain and capitalize on the talent of returning professionals.” This underscores the importance of efforts by governments at all levels to make the home country more attractive to its citizens.

The research further emphasizes that migration trends are volatile, with fluctuations in local opportunities directly influencing the number of emigrants. This points to the need for long-term economic stability and sustainable policies to manage migration flows effectively.

Beyond Nigeria, the JAPA Model could serve as a blueprint for other African nations facing similar challenges. By understanding the complex motivations behind migration, governments can better craft policies that address the root causes of brain drain, ensuring that Africa retains its skilled workforce for future development.

The team also includes Dr. Emmanuel Jesuyon Dansu, Dr. Michael Adeniyi, Mr. Seun Ale, Dr. Matthew Ekum, Prof. Michael Shatalov, and Prof. Opeyemi Enoch.
