Media holds roundtable on industry regulation today

Leading media houses in the country and stakeholders, including civil society and non-media groups, would gather in Lagos today to discuss an acceptable framework for regulating the media industry in the country.

Leading media houses in the country and stakeholders, including civil society and non-media groups, would gather in Lagos today to discuss an acceptable framework for regulating the media industry in the country.

Executive Secretary, of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Feyi Smith, disclosed this in a statement at the weekend.

He explained that the move to deepen public trust by setting up a credible adjudicatory mechanism was under the auspices of NPAN in collaboration with the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) and MacArthur Foundation.

Respected media guru and former governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba, would preside at the roundtable. Other prominent leaders from media practice, management, ownership, academia and professionals, leaders of prominent media NGOs, the Bar, legislature and the diplomatic corps are also expected.

The theme of the roundtable is: ‘Deepening Media Professionalism Through Co-regulation,’ and the programme would be in two sessions: Thoughts on co-regulation through an independent Ombudsman framework and the revised draft of a new Code of Ethics for Nigerian journalists.

The event will hold at Protea Hotel Ikeja Select, Alausa, Ikeja by 10:00 a.m.

NPAN President and President of the Nigeria Press Organisation (NPO), Mallam Kabiru Yusuf, would be supported by the President of NGE, Mr. Mustapha Isah; President of NUJ, Chief Chris Isiguzo; President of BON, Mr. John Ugbe; President, Silverbird Group and Chairman, Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (IBAN), Mr Guy Murray-Bruce and President of NBA, Mr Yakubu Maikyau (SAN).

Others include a publisher of Vanguard Newspaper, Mr. Sam Amuka; Chairman of THISDAY and Arise News Channel, Nduka Obaigbena; former Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch, Mr. Ray Ekpu; publisher of The Guardian Newspaper, Lady Maiden Alex-Ibru; publisher of BusinessDay, Mr. Frank Aigbogun; Chairman of Punch newspaper, Ms Angela Emuwa; Chairman of Channels TV, John Momoh; former MD of The Guardian, Mr Lade Bonuola; CEO, Diamond Publications, Mr. Lanre Idowu; GM, Vanguard, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye; Editor-in-Chief of Leadership, Mr. Azu Ishiekwene and CEO, Daria Media and Radio Now, Ms. Kadaria Ahmed.
