MonITNG urges renovation of dilapidated primary school in Katsina

A civil society organisation (CSO), MonITNG, has called for the renovation of LGEA Primary School, Gyastuwa, in Sandada Ward, Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, which is currently in a state of disrepair.

The CSO, which tracks public projects, made the appeal after a recent visit to the community, lamenting the deplorable state of the school’s structure.

MonITNG, in a statement, revealed that children in the community have stopped attending classes because there is no decent structure for learning.

“The only primary school in this entire community, once a place of hope and learning, now lies in total ruin. Its classrooms have been completely destroyed by strong winds, leaving behind collapsed walls and an empty shell that can no longer serve its purpose.

“As a result, children in Gyastuwa have stopped going to school altogether because there is simply no safe space for learning,” the CSO noted.

According to MonITNG, the condition of LGEA Primary School, Gyastuwa, reflects the broader state of the education sector in Katsina, where billions are allocated yearly, yet schools in underserved communities remain in deplorable condition.

The CSO criticised both the present and past administrations for neglecting the school and failing to prioritise the future of children in the state.

“The current government, under Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, has done little to change this reality. Despite enormous budgetary provisions, there has been no significant project focused on rebuilding schools or improving educational infrastructure.

“The neglect is so severe that many children in the state are being denied their constitutional right to education — a right that should never be negotiable,” it further noted.

MonITNG also appealed to the Katsina State Government to utilise its share of the ₦121 billion recently released by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) to 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and urgently renovate the school to enable children who have been locked out of classrooms to return to learning.
