Mother of five dies in Anambra flood

A middle-aged woman, identified as Mrs. Onyinye Okafor, has died in a flood, which swept her off during a heavy rainfall in Oko, Orumba North Local Council of Anambra State.

A middle-aged woman, identified as Mrs. Onyinye Okafor, has died in a flood, which swept her off during a heavy rainfall in Oko, Orumba North Local Council of Anambra State.
   
The Guardian learnt that the mother of five died on her way home after visiting a bank, within the area, to transact some businesses.
  
An eyewitness said the deceased, from Etti in Nanka community, Orumba North Local Council, was swept away by the flood after she jumped out of a tricycle she boarded in an attempt to save her life.
  


The witness, who pleaded anonymity, said the incident happened at about 11:49p.m. on Tuesday after the woman came out from the bank where she went to perform some transactions.
   
He said: “Due to the heavy rain, she packed her motorcycle within the area and boarded a tricycle to the bank, after which she boarded another tricycle to pick her parked bike.
  
“While on the tricycle, the rider lost control due to the heavy flood and was struggling to return to his lane.
  
“Suddenly, the woman jumped out of the tricycle in the midst of the flood in an attempt to save herself.
  
“Immediately, she jumped down, she misstepped and fell into a drainage ditch and was washed away by the flood.”
  
He regretted that the body of the deceased was later recovered under a culvert at the gate of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, after hours of intensive search, adding that she was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where she was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.
  
Confirming the incident, yesterday, the Police spokesperson in Anambra State, Ikenga Tochukwu, said the deceased’s body had been recovered, while investigations into the incident had commenced.
  
“The corpse has been recovered, but the identity of the victim is yet to be ascertained,” Tochukwu said.
