NELFUND disburses N14.7m loan to 242 Forestry College students

Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND)

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has disbursed N14,769,400 to the Federal College of Forestry, Jos, Plateau State, under the Federal Government’s Student Loan Programme, benefiting 242 students of the institution.

The disbursement was disclosed in an acknowledgement letter dated June 25, 2026, and signed by the Provost of the college, Dr Sunday Mailumo.

Addressed to the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, the letter confirmed that the funds, amounting to N14,769,400, were received for students captured under the scheme as of June 19, 2026.

“I, Dr. Sunday Sambo Mailumo, Provost Federal College of Forestry, Jos wish to acknowledge the disbursement of the sum of N14,769,400.00 (Fourteen Million, Seven Hundred and Sixty-Nine Thousand Four Hundred Naira) only under the Student Loan Program,” the letter stated.

According to the Provost, a total of 242 students benefited from the disbursement.

The latest payment adds to the growing list of tertiary institutions receiving student loan funds from NELFUND as the agency continues the countrywide implementation of the Federal Government’s flagship higher education financing initiative.

The student loan scheme, launched by President Bola Tinubu’s administration in 2024, is designed to remove financial barriers to tertiary education by providing interest-free loans for tuition fees and monthly upkeep allowances to eligible Nigerian students.

NELFUND has, in recent months, accelerated disbursements to beneficiary institutions across the country, with thousands of students receiving support under the programme. The intervention is expected to improve access to higher education and reduce the number of students forced to defer or abandon their studies due to financial constraints.

Checks on the dashboard of the agency on Sunday, revealed that as of July 4, 2026, it has disbursed over N303billion in institutional fees and upkeep allowance across 315 institutions and 1.6million students.
