Niger governor to host green economy summit in 100 days

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, has said plans are underway to host the first ever Green Economy Summit to mark his 100 days in office. Bago announced this after launching a Green Economy initiative, aimed at boosting green growth and climate change adaptability in Niger State.

Bago maintained that he will unlock the potential of green investments to revolutionise the economy of the state and improve the lives and livelihoods of citizens.

The governor had earlier set up a committee to assist the state develop a blueprint and an implementation framework to achieve the objective of a green economy for the state.

He emphasised the need for committee members to come up with modalities that would enable the state to leverage its carbon credentials to spur development that is sustainable.

His words: “I will personally lead the campaign to plant millions of trees across the state to accomplish global sustainable development goals, and Nigeria’s climate change target, as well as African Union Agenda 2063, one billion trees for Africa vision and the great green wall.”

The committee has Professor M.T. Usman as its Chairman.

The team of experts at the launch lauded the governor and assured him of their support for his vision, adding that it is a noble idea that will place the state on the radar of global prominence, and bring pride to Nigeria as a whole.

The President of One Billion Trees for Africa and Ambassador of the African Union Great Green Wall, Dr. Tabi Haman Joda participated at the green economy launch.
