The Igala Cultural and Development Association (ICDA) has commended the National Assembly for restoring six additional state constituencies in Kogi State.

In a statement issued in Lokoja on Wednesday, ICDA National Secretary, Alhaji Rufai Yahaya, described the move as a long-awaited victory for the people of Kogi East Senatorial District.

“It is a thing of joy for the people of Kogi East and the entire state to receive the news of the restoration of six state constituencies suppressed since 2015,” he said.

Yahaya credited the effort to Rt. Hon. Abdullahi Ibrahim Halims, Deputy Leader of the House of Representatives and Member Representing Ankpa, Omala, and Olamaboro Federal Constituency, who moved for the enforcement of a 2015 Federal High Court judgment in Lokoja.

The motion, titled ‘Urgent Need for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to Restore Suppressed Six State Assembly Constituencies in Kogi East Senatorial District of Kogi State’, was seconded by Hon. Aguye Suleiman
Danladi of Lokoja/Kogi-Kotonkarfe Federal Constituency.

The restored constituencies include Bassa-Nge/Igbirra, Igala Ogba, Enjema, Ugwolawo/Itobe, Ife/Ogodu, Dekina Town, and Dekina District. Their reinstatement will increase Kogi East’s representation in the State House of Assembly
from eleven to seventeen.

The ICDA urged President Bola Tinubu to approve the judgment and direct the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct elections to fill the vacancies, addressing what it described as a long-standing

injustice against the Igala-Bassa people.

“We call on the House of Representatives Committees on INEC, Judiciary, and Legislative Compliance to ensure immediate implementation,” Yahaya added.
