10 dead, 11 injured in Kogi road crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 10 people died and 11 others were injured in a fatal road crash on the Obajana-Lokoja highway in Kogi State.

According to the FRSC, the accident occurred late Friday night, October 10, 2025, at about 11:30 p.m. near Apamaru Junction, Obajana.

In a statement on Saturday, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, urged passengers to stay alert and report reckless driving to the FRSC toll-free number 122 or highway patrol personnel to prevent further tragedies.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number KTG 100YL, carrying 21 male passengers, was involved in the crash.

The driver reportedly lost control while attempting a dangerous overtaking maneuver at high speed.

Ten passengers died instantly, while 11 others sustained severe injuries, including fractures and deep cuts. They were taken to Fisayo Hospital in Obajana for treatment.

The remains of the deceased were handed over to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites at Sarikin Hausawa, Obajana.

“Passengers must take responsibility by reporting reckless drivers through the FRSC toll-free number 122 or the nearest patrol team. Road safety is a shared duty — everyone must play their part to prevent needless deaths,” Mohammed said.

He expressed sadness over the recurring loss of lives on Nigerian highways, attributing most crashes to night travel, speeding, and reckless overtaking.

He added that the Corps would intensify public education and enforcement operations targeting late-night travel and overloaded vehicles.

Assistant Corps Marshal and Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to reducing accidents and saving lives through constant monitoring, awareness campaigns, and community partnerships.
