16-year-old arrested over alleged fatal stabbing of 20-year-old in Cross River

A family in Awi, Calabar, Cross River State, was left grieving on Monday night after a 20-year-old man, Uwem Daniel Akpan, died following an alleged stabbing during a disagreement.

Akpan was reportedly involved in a misunderstanding with another person at Peters Street, Awi, at about 7:30 p.m. on August 31, 2026, when the incident occurred.

He was rushed to the Naval Reference Hospital, Calabar, in an attempt to save his life, but doctors later confirmed his death.

His remains were subsequently recovered by members of his family.

Following the incident, the Cross River State Police Command arrested a 16-year-old male suspect in connection with Akpan’s death.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued yesterday, saying the suspect remained in police custody as investigators worked to establish what led to the fatal incident.

Eitokpah said the police had commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged stabbing and the suspect’s involvement.

He added that the case was being processed for transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Calabar, for further investigation and appropriate legal action.

The police spokesperson appealed to members of the public to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

He assured the public that the circumstances surrounding Akpan’s death would be thoroughly investigated, adding that further information would be released as the investigation progresses and more facts emerge.
