The Borno State Police Command on Monday confirmed the recovery of an unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Dikwa Local Government Area, hours before a separate explosion in Konduga claimed two lives and left four injured.
Police spokesperson Nahum Daso said the discovery was made after a farmer, Babagana Kachalla, alerted authorities to a suspicious object on his land.
A team deployed by Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid identified the object as a 2.2-meter-long cluster bomb unit (CBU).
“The device was safely secured, and no casualties were recorded,” Daso stated. He added that officers conducted a safety sensitisation exercise for residents on how to identify and report explosive hazards.
In Konduga Local Government Area, however, a separate incident led to fatalities. Local sources reported that six boys unknowingly brought a bomb into Ajari village as scrap metal. The device detonated, killing two and injuring four.
The injured victims were taken to General Hospital Konduga for treatment. As of press time, police had not issued an official statement on the Konduga blast.
The two incidents highlight the continued threat of unexploded devices in communities across Borno State, more than a decade after insurgency-related violence left many areas contaminated with explosives.
