Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) apprehended 35 suspected Internet fraudsters in Auchi, Etsako West Local Council of Edo State, yesterday.
The arrests were carried out across multiple locations in the town, specifically on Vigilante Street, off Sabo Ibienafe Road, and in the Back of Yak areas.
According to a statement shared on the verified X (formerly Twitter) handle of the anti-graft agency, the operation followed “credible intelligence” linking the suspects to fraudulent internet activities.
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to tackling cybercrime, stating: “We remain resolute in our mandate to rid Nigeria of economic and financial crimes.”
During the operation, the agency recovered several items from the suspects, including nine cars, 11 laptop computers, 46 mobile phones, and two smart watches. These items are believed to have been used in the commission of the alleged fraudulent activities.
The suspects are currently in custody and undergoing investigation. The EFCC confirmed that they would be charged in court once the probe is concluded.
The operation marks another significant step in the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to combat the rising tide of Internet fraud, commonly known as “Yahoo Yahoo,” in Nigeria. Auchi, a major town in Edo State, has been identified as a hotspot for such activities, prompting increased surveillance and enforcement actions by the agency.
The EFCC continues to encourage the public to report suspicious activities and provide credible information to support the fight against economic and financial crimes.
