A twin duplex building in Ibadan was razed by fire on Saturday following a suspected electrical surge, with firefighters preventing the blaze from spreading to nearby properties.

The incident was reported to the Oyo State Fire Services Agency at about 7:23 a.m. through a telephone call from a resident, Mrs. Faith, who alerted the agency to the fire outbreak.

The firefighting crew, led by a Chief Fire Superintendent (CFS) promptly mobilised to the scene.

On arrival, the firefighters found the twin duplex, comprising four-bedroom and three-bedroom flats, engulfed in flames and thick smoke.

The agency said its officers immediately commenced firefighting operations and successfully brought the fire under control, thereby preventing it from spreading to nearby properties.

It said the suspected cause of the fire was an electrical surge.

No casualty was recorded in the incident, although the affected building was damaged by the fire.

The fire appliance returned safely to the station at about 11:09 a.m. and was placed on operational standby.

The Special Adviser on Fire Service Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Hon. Dr Moroof Akinwande, urged residents to remain fire-conscious and take necessary precautions to prevent outbreaks.

He also stressed the importance of installing and regularly maintaining functional fire extinguishers in homes and other buildings to enable occupants to tackle fire at the incipient stage.
