Fire guts Abuja hotel, razes 10 rooms

A midnight fire has gutted a popular hotel located at the Okonjo Iweala Way in Utako District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The fire, which began around midnight of Monday, March 9, 2026, has been described by observers as ‘one disaster too many in Nigeria’s seat of power.

It razed 10 rooms on the third floor of the hotel and could have spread to other parts but was contained by a combined team of Julius Berger, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the fire service.

The incident occurred hours after a section of another public building, the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF), located at the Federal Secretariat opposite the Eagle Square, was razed by fire as early as 8:00 a.m.

National Public Relations Officer of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Paul Abraham, who confirmed the incident, said the agency responded immediately it was alerted.

He said, “Our men arrived at the scene at about 9:00p.m.”

Abraham assured that he would keep the public abreast of developments as they unfold.

Meanwhile, residents have expressed shock at the ‘back to back’ fire outbreaks in Abuja, noting with concern the need for fire safety measures.
