Flooded streets leave commuters stranded after heavy rainfall in Ejigbo
Residents at the Iyana Ejigbo bus stop in Ejigbo Local Council were left stranded yesterday after an early morning downpour submerged the main road leading to Ikotun, leaving commuters struggling to reach their destinations.
The heavy rainfall caused severe flooding, forcing commuters heading towards Oshodi and the Ejigbo-Idimu road to wade through floodwaters. The area’s poor drainage system exacerbated the situation, making travel nearly impossible.
The Guardian observed that the inadequate drainage systems and improper waste disposal left the streets submerged in murky water. Plastic bags, styrofoam, and damaged household items clogged the drains, causing the roads to flood and residents to lose valuable time waiting for the water to recede.
According to locals, the issue of mounting waste has persisted for a long time, with little action taken to address it, leaving many residents frustrated.
A shop owner, Tola Alade, lamented: “They keep promising to fix the drainage, but nothing has changed. The gutters are filled with rubbish, and when it rains, the water has nowhere to go.
I’ve had to close my shop several times this year because the floods ruined my goods. It’s not just a loss of income; it’s our livelihood, and nobody seems to care.”
A commuter, Tosin Adeniji, shared a similar experience: “I was heading to work this morning, but the road was completely flooded. I tried to find another route, but it was the same story everywhere. I had no choice but to tread water. When I got to the bus stop, my shoes were soaked. It’s frustrating because the filth is unbearable, with trash and waste mixed into the water. It’s disgusting, and nobody should have to deal with this.”
