For the widows left behind by military and police personnel who died serving Nigeria, the loss of their husbands is a pain that financial assistance can never erase.

But a recent intervention by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has offered some measure of relief and renewed hope to hundreds of such families.

The Prayer and Support for Nigerian Armed Forces and Other Security Agencies (PSNAFSA) has commended the First Lady for providing N500,000 each to 1,638 widows of fallen personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the Nigeria Police Force.

The intervention, implemented through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), amounted to N819 million and was described by PSNAFSA as a demonstration of compassion and recognition of the sacrifices made by security personnel in the service of the country.

In a statement signed by its Convener, Ambassador Mary Abayomi-Fatile, the group said the gesture was particularly significant because behind every fallen hero was a family forced to cope with the pain and hardship of losing a husband, father or loved one.

“For those of us who consistently pray for and support Nigeria’s Armed Forces and other security agencies, we understand the sacrifices made by these gallant men and women, many of whom pay the supreme price while defending the territorial integrity, peace and security of Nigeria,” the group said.

PSNAFSA noted that the widows and children of fallen personnel were part of the enduring legacy of those who died in the line of duty and deserved the care, support and recognition of the nation.

It said the financial assistance could help beneficiaries establish new businesses or strengthen existing ones, thereby improving their capacity to provide for their families and achieve greater economic independence.

The group urged governments at all levels, corporate organisations, private individuals and other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the gesture and sustain support for families of personnel who lost their lives serving the country.

According to PSNAFSA, supporting the families of fallen heroes should go beyond politics, administration or individual interests, describing it as a “national duty.”

“While no financial assistance can ever replace a lost husband, father or loved one, gestures of this nature provide hope, dignity and reassurance that the sacrifices of our fallen heroes have not been forgotten,” it said.

The group also called on the Federal Government to sustain and expand welfare programmes for widows and children of fallen military, police and other security personnel.

It urged that greater attention be given to education, healthcare, housing, skills acquisition and sustainable economic empowerment to enable affected families build more secure futures.

PSNAFSA expressed appreciation to the First Lady for what it described as a timely and commendable intervention, while praying for continued wisdom and strength for her to sustain initiatives aimed at bringing hope and succour to vulnerable Nigerians.
