The Impacthive Centre for Accountability, Democracy and Rights (ICADAR) has called for a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into the killing of Islamic cleric, Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka, demanding that those responsible be brought to justice.
The group condemned the killing of the cleric, describing it as a major loss to his family, followers and communities that benefited from his advocacy for peace, interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
Masussuka was reportedly shot dead alongside his associate, Adamu Abubakar, by two armed men riding on a motorcycle in front of his residence in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State on Monday night. The police have confirmed the killings and said an investigation has commenced.
In a statement, ICADAR’s Executive Director, Bello Ishaq, said the cleric devoted his life to promoting understanding among people of different religious and community backgrounds.
He said the killing was particularly painful because of Masussuka’s efforts to encourage tolerance, dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
“No disagreement, grievance or difference can justify the taking of a human life,” the group said, warning that such violence could deepen fear and division in affected communities.
ICADAR extended its condolences to the cleric’s family, loved ones, colleagues and followers, urging the authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure that anyone found responsible was prosecuted through due process.
It said a credible investigation was necessary not only to secure justice for the deceased and his family but also to sustain public confidence and prevent further violence.
The group urged communities to uphold the values of tolerance, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence that the cleric promoted during his lifetime.
Meanwhile, the Katsina State Police Command said it had deployed tactical and operational teams to track down the suspects. The police also appealed to members of the public to provide useful information that could assist the investigation.
