A non-profit organisation, Help to the Ageing has supported elderly residents in Isale-Oja, Agege, Lagos State with essential items and medical care to improve their welfare during festive outreach.

The initiative provided over 150 elderly individuals with food, clothing, household items, and medical care, ensuring they felt valued and supported during the festive season.

Speaking, the organisation’s founder, Jumoke Kolawole, highlighted the dire challenges faced by the elderly in Nigeria.

“Rising food prices and the overall cost of living have made life extremely difficult for our elderly population. Many are neglected, with limited or no support from government initiatives.
This outreach was designed to bridge that gap and bring relief to those who need it most,” she explained.

According to her, the programme is part of a larger outreach that has impacted over 8,000 individuals across multiple locations.

“Help to the Ageing remains committed to addressing the needs of elderly citizens, especially in the absence of adequate government support.

“As the holiday season continues, the organisation is calling on individuals, businesses, and policymakers to prioritise elderly welfare.

“Together, we can ensure every elder in our community experiences dignity, care, and the joy of being remembered during this special time of year,” Kolawole said.

The programme featured free medical check-ups conducted by health professionals, along with health education sessions led by Mrs. Oyetola Sumbo, the programme coordinator. “Help to the Ageing runs impactful programmes that go beyond welfare.

“They restore hope, alleviate hardships, and improve the quality of life for our elderly community,” she noted.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Kehinde Bakare expressed deep gratitude for the support, stating that the initiative has helped aged women in so many ways and the initiative has become a beacon of hope.

“This is the way the government and rich men in the country are supposed to be helping the older ones. The older ones need help at this point of their age. We truly appreciate this foundation and pray for its continued growth,” he added.
