Two police officers attached to the Aluu Divisional Police Station in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State have been killed in a deadly attack by unidentified gunmen along the Mbodo-Aluu axis of Obiri Ikwerre Road.
The incident, which occurred at about 9 p.m., threw the area into panic as the officers were reportedly conducting a routine stop-and-search operation at a security checkpoint when they came under attack.
A viral video circulating on social media showed the lifeless bodies of the slain officers, still clad in their police uniforms, lying in pools of blood at the scene, highlighting the brutality of the attack.
A visit to the area on Tuesday, residents and business owners declined to comment on the incident, apparently out of fear. The motive behind the attack could not be immediately established.
The killings have heightened concerns over the safety of security personnel and the growing threat posed by armed criminals operating in parts of the state.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, visited the scene of the attack alongside members of the Command’s management team for an on-the-spot assessment.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Blessing Agabe, confirmed the visit, stating that the Command would issue an official statement on the incident.
