‘I killed him for revenge,’ Murder suspect tells Police in Cross River

Nigerian Police Force (NPF)

The Cross River State Police Command has said investigations are ongoing into the alleged murder of two persons in Creek Town, Odukpani Local Government Area, while a suspect in custody has reportedly confessed to carrying out the killings.

In an update issued on Friday, the Command disclosed that the prime suspect, identified as Akaninyine Eretus, 40, is assisting investigators following his arrest in connection with the incident.

According to the police, Eretus allegedly admitted during interrogation to killing two men identified only as Okokon and Okon on May 24 and May 25, 2026, respectively.

The suspect reportedly told investigators that one of the victims was attacked and killed while asleep, while the second was allegedly hacked to death with a machete.

Police said the suspect claimed his actions were motivated by a desire to avenge the deaths of his parents and two elder brothers, who he alleged were killed during a communal crisis that occurred in the area about 29 years ago.

The Command, however, cautioned that the statements made by the suspect remain allegations that are subject to thorough investigation and verification.

According to the police, two bodies believed to be those of the victims have been recovered and deposited at a hospital morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, said investigators are working to establish all the facts surrounding the incident and determine the authenticity of the suspect’s claims.

“The suspect’s statements remain subject to thorough investigation and verification,” the police spokesman stated.

The Command also warned members of the public against spreading unverified information or rumours that could compromise ongoing investigations or create tension within the affected community.

Residents were urged to rely only on official information released by the police regarding the case.

The police assured that further updates would be provided as investigations progress.

The latest development comes amid heightened concern in Creek Town following reports of the killings, which have drawn public attention and renewed calls for peace in the community.
