Man alleges police brutality, unfair detention in Ibadan
A 48-year-old resident of Jericho GRA, Ibadan, Mark Davies, has accused the Oyo State Police Command of mistreatment and unlawful detention.
Davies claimed the incident began with a verbal altercation with a neighbourhood boy while he was out buying medicine for his sick children. He alleged the boy’s mother later confronted him with a group of people, and a physical assault ensued.
Davies reported that he was unable to leave his home to file a complaint because the group blocked his gate. The woman involved then brought officers from the Eleyele Division to arrest him. He was subsequently detained at the station.
At the police station, Davies claimed his recorded evidence of the assault was ignored, and he was subjected to torture, handcuffed, and denied access to his phone to contact someone to care for his sick children.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Eleyele Division, Grace Akinteyinwa, offered a different account. She alleged that Davies had been verbally abusing the 15-year-old boy due to his disability. The DPO stated that Davies also made derogatory remarks about the boy’s parents.
Davies maintained that he had evidence to support his claims and that the police did not conduct a thorough investigation. He expressed frustration that the individuals who allegedly assaulted him were not questioned.
The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Adewale Osifeso, has advised Davies to visit the station with his lawyer to address the matter further.
