Man arrested after youth dies in Calabar knife attack

The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 49-year-old man, Idris Abdullahi, over the alleged murder of a young man following a knife attack in Calabar.

Police spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, who confirmed the incident on Monday, said the suspect was involved in an altercation with some street boys along Mary Slessor Road on June 14, during which he allegedly sustained injuries.

According to Eitokpah, Abdullahi was reportedly attacked at about 6:05 p.m. by one of the youths whose identity has yet to be established.

The police spokesman said the suspect later traced the alleged assailant to his location on June 15 and chased him to Chronicle Barracks Road, opposite Akim Police Barracks.

He alleged that Abdullahi stabbed the victim with a knife during the encounter, leaving him critically injured.

The victim was immediately rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for treatment but was later confirmed dead by doctors.

Eitokpah disclosed that the body of the deceased has been deposited at the General Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

He added that the suspect has been arrested, while the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation and possible prosecution.
