The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) has sealed Bonny Pie Industry in Akinbo Township, Ewekoro Local Council, over allegations of environmental pollution through the discharge of wastewater into a river used by residents of the community.
The action followed a directive by the General Manager of OGEPA, Kehinde Bello, through the agency’s enforcement unit, after a petition was lodged by the Olu of Akinbo, Oba Rasheed Olamilekan.
In the petition, the monarch alleged that the company had been discharging untreated wastewater into a river serving the Akinbo community.
He expressed concern that the discharge could endanger the environment and pose serious public health risks to residents who depend on the water source.
Following receipt of the complaint, the agency’s enforcement unit conducted an inspection of the facility to assess the situation and verify the claims contained in the petition.
Based on the findings from the preliminary inspection, the agency sealed the facility as a precautionary measure to prevent further environmental impact pending the outcome of a detailed investigation.
Bello reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to environmental protection and strict enforcement of compliance with environmental laws, regulations and standards by industries operating within the state.
He also assured residents of the Akinbo community that the investigation would be conducted with diligence and transparency, adding that appropriate measures would be taken in line with the outcome of the investigation.
