One pedestrian died and five others injured following a road accident at Cele Expressway in Lagos State.
The accident involved a 40-foot containerised truck, five commercial buses, and two private vehicles along the Cele Expressway corridor, inward Oshodi, on Saturday.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed this in a statement.
LASTMA’s spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed that preliminary findings from on-site investigations indicated that the heavy-duty truck, conveying two large containers, suffered a catastrophic brake failure while travelling at an excessive speed.
“The resulting loss of control led to the dislodgment of the containers, which subsequently collapsed onto 5 commercial buses and a pair of private vehicles, causing significant structural damage and human casualties,” Taofiq said.
Taofiq disclosed that one of the commercial bus drivers reportedly suffered multiple compound fractures to his arm and leg.
The other injured parties were quickly transported by LASAMBUS to the General Hospital, Isolo medical facility for prompt treatment.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended condolences to the bereaved family and conveyed his wishes for the swift recovery of the injured.
Bakare-Oki seized the occasion to reiterate the imperative for articulated vehicle operators, especially those transporting containerised cargo to subject their trucks to routine mechanical assessments, with particular attention to braking systems.
He also admonished all motorists to comply with the speed limits on Lagos roads and extant traffic laws established to safeguard public roads.
