Oyo police rescue kidnap victim, launch manhunt for suspects

Police nabbed 26 suspects for tree-felling in Yobe

The Oyo State Police Command has rescued a man abducted during an attempted kidnapping in Olorunda Village, Ojongbodu, Oyo West Local Government Area (LGA), while launching an operation to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

The victim, identified as Haruna Lawal, sustained a head injury during the incident.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olayinka Ayanlade, said the command received a distress call at about 2:10 a.m. on January 24, 2026, from a local resident, Alimot, reporting that armed individuals had invaded her brother’s residence and abducted Lawal, taking his motorcycle away.

“Upon receipt of the report and acting on the directives of the Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, operatives of the command immediately swung into action and were deployed to the area,” Ayanlade said.

He explained that the swift deployment, including patrol vans and bush-combing teams, pressured the kidnappers, who abandoned the victim and fled once they realised security forces were closing in.

Lawal was rescued alive and taken to the General Hospital in Oyo town, where he is receiving medical care for his head injury. Ayanlade noted that the operation demonstrated the command’s readiness to respond to threats against public safety.

The police have intensified efforts to track and arrest the suspects, while investigations into the case continue. Residents were urged to provide timely and credible information to assist ongoing operations.
Commissioner of Police Femi Haruna acknowledged the guidance of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and commended officers involved for their professionalism and dedication.

“The commissioner further commended the gallant officers and operatives involved in the operation, in collaboration with strategic partners, for their courage, professionalism and commitment to duty,” the statement added.
