Police arraign surety after suspect who ‘stole money’ flees in Lagos

A 52-year-old man, Lucky Segun, who stood surety for Abayomi Badejo, was on Wednesday docked in an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, for failing to produce the suspect.

Segun was charged with contempt of court and accessory after the fact, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp Femi Omilana, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 7, at the Command Monitoring Unit, Eleyele, Ibadan.

He said the defendant stood surety for Badejo, who was involved in a case of obtaining money under false pretences and stealing, but failed to produce him on demand.

Omilana said the defendant made himself an accessory after by aiding Badejo to escape being apprehended by the police, knowing fully well that he committed the offence.

He said the offences contravened Sections 126 and 519 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The Magistrate, Mrs Adebola Adeola, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 and two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case until June 13 for a hearing.
