A 32-year-old housewife, resident of of Obosi, Idemili North Council area of Anambra State, Ogechi Ofoma, has been arrested by the state police command for allegedly torturing her seven-year-old daughter named Oluebube Ofoma, with a hot kitchen knife in different parts of her fragile young body.
The toddler was rescued following the timely intervention of security personnel from Awada-Obosi, and other concerned residents.
Confirming her arrest, the Anambra State Police Command, the police public relations officer (ppro) said it received a report of alleged child abuse and severe bodily injuries involving the seven-year-old girl and consequently moved in.
The PPRO, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement, saying the that prompt intervention of the community security personnel and residents led to the child’s rescue and the arrest of her mother who incidentally was the culprit.
He said,”The prompt intervention of security personnel from the Ibollo Community, Awada-Obosi, and concerned residents led to the child’s rescue and the arrest of her mother, Mrs. Ogechi Ofoma, 32,” the statement read in part.
Ikenga noted that preliminary information indicated that the child was subjected to severe physical abuse, including injuries allegedly inflicted with a hot knife.
The command condemned the alleged brutal treatment of the girl, assuring that all those found responsible would be brought to justice.
The Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Oji Ama, has also commenced collaboration with the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare to ensure that the victim receives urgent medical attention, protection and other necessary welfare support.
