Police arrest eight suspects, seize illicit drugs in Maiduguri

The Borno State Police Command has arrested eight suspects and recovered illicit drugs during an operation in Maiduguri and Jere Local Council of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nahum Daso, disclosed this in a statement issued in Maiduguri on Friday. He said that on Thursday, January 16, 2026, at 4:00 p.m., operatives acting on credible intelligence carried out an operation along Baga Road, Maiduguri, where the suspects were arrested.

Daso said the suspects are aged between 18 and 25. He added that the suspects were found in possession of a large cache of hard drugs and other illicit substances. According to him, items recovered included 700 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, 10 packs of tramadol tablets and 2,500 tablets of exol.

The spokesperson said the suspects and the recovered exhibits are currently in police custody, while investigations are ongoing. He assured that upon the conclusion of investigations, the suspects would be charged to court for prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, reiterated the command’s commitment to ridding the state of criminal elements and warned those involved in drug peddling and related offences to desist .
