Police bust gang member behind viral Rivers car-snatching incident

The Rivers State Police Command has announced a breakthrough in the investigation into a viral video showing an armed robbery incident at the Choba area of Port Harcourt on October 15, 2025.

The robbery, which took place around 8:00 p.m. the previous day, involved the snatching of a Toyota Avalon car at gunpoint.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said in a statement yesterday that operatives, acting on intelligence and technical support, arrested one of the suspects, identified as 42-year-old Iruo Young, at his hideout in Ikoku, Port Harcourt.

According to Iringe-Koko, the suspect voluntarily confessed to the crime during interrogation and provided detailed information about his role in the robbery.

“The suspect is currently in police custody, and an in-depth investigation has been launched to apprehend the other fleeing suspects, recover the stolen vehicle, and retrieve the firearms used in the commission of the crime,” she said. “The police are working tirelessly to ensure that all those involved in the crime are brought to justice.”

The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, commended the operatives for their diligence and swift response, which led to the suspect’s arrest. He also thanked members of the public for sharing credible information that aided the investigation.

Adepoju warned that Rivers State would not serve as a safe haven for criminals, reiterating the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property and maintaining law and order across the state.
