The Lagos State Police Command has debunked the news making the rounds that its operatives on Monday restricted entry into the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, denying the report in a statement said that to forestall the breakdown of law and order, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, ordered the proactive deployment of human and operational resources to the House of Assembly.
Hundeyin explained that this is also to ensure watertight security and prevent miscreants and thugs from causing mayhem.
“For clarification, entry is allowed into the Assembly complex for journalists and every other person with genuine business to carry out there,” he said.
“Furthermore, part of the measures employed is diversion of vehicular traffic around the Assembly complex. This is necessary to ensure firm grip and control over the security architecture.”
Hundeyin added that, for emphasis, there is no restriction of movement into the Lagos State House of Assembly.
“The diversion of traffic was proactively emplaced to forestall breakdown of law and order in the Assembly and its environs,” he stated.
The premises of the Lagos State House of Assembly was reportedly under heavy security presence amid the controversy surrounding the speakership position.
Journalists who tried to enter the premises were prevented by armed police officers who mounted several vans at strategic points leading to the assembly complex.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing Apapa Constituency 1, Mojisola Meranda, on Monday tendered her resignation as Speaker of the House.
She was sworn in on January 13, 2025, after 30 lawmakers removed the lawmaker representing Agege Constituency 1, Mudashiru Obasa, as speaker.
However, the removal was challenged by Obasa, who described it as illegal while affirming that he is still the speaker of the assembly.
