Police launch manhunt for killers of Lagos NURTW organising secretary

Toba Ajiboye

GUNMEN have killed Toba Ajiboye popularly known as ljaya, the Organising Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
Ajiboye was attacked on Sunday, July 12, 2026, becoming the third senior NURTW official in Lagos to be killed in recent years.

He followed Olayemi Mathew Eniola, popularly known as Esi Oluwo or Baba Esi, who was murdered in Oshodi on March 28, 2015, and Onaopemipo Lawal, popularly known as Ariku, who was killed in the Mile 12 area of Lagos in 2022.
The deceased was reportedly returning home on Sunday night from his childhood community in Fadeyi when the attackers struck.

The gunmen allegedly intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road corridor and opened fire, leaving it riddled with bullet holes.
Images and videos circulated on social media after the attack showed Ajiboye’s white vehicle extensively damaged, with bullet holes visible on the windscreen and other parts of the car.

Although initial reports indicated that Ajiboye and other occupants of the vehicle survived after sustaining gunshot wounds, later updates confirmed that the union official died at St. Nicholas Hospital while receiving treatment.
Lagos NURTW Chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, mourned Ajiboye’s death, describing him as a dependable associate and close friend.

Sego said the news came as a painful shock, adding that Ajiboye’s dedication to the union and their political structure would be remembered.
“The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable and committed ally,” he said.

He described the late union leader as “more than an ally”, adding that he was a pillar of TeamSego and SegoNation.
“My heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends and the entire NURTW family. May Almighty God forgive his shortcomings, grant him eternal rest, and give us all the strength and fortitude to bear this painful and irreparable loss.”
