Former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Mike Mbama Okiro made a passionate appeal for peace in Rivers State on Wednesday, warning that continued political conflict could turn the state into a battleground and threaten its economic strength and stability.

Okiro stressed that no leader can govern in the midst of war and urged all stakeholders to recognise the necessity of peace.

Okiro, who disclosed this in Abuja during a press briefing, warned that continued political conflict could turn the state into a no-go area, threatening its economic strength and stability.

Reflecting on his time as IG of Police, Okiro recalled his efforts to restore peace in the Niger Delta, particularly in Port Harcourt, where businesses were forced to shut down due to insecurity.

He said: “At one point, all companies had left, hotels were closed, and economic activities had come to a halt. If I had not taken decisive action then, the situation would have worsened. We cannot allow Rivers State to descend into chaos again.

“No problem exists without a solution. If we engage each faction one by one, we can understand their grievances and find a way forward. Leaders must remember that they represent the people, and governance cannot function amid conflict. I appeal to them to set aside their differences and give peace a chance.”

Okiro urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other influential figures in Rivers State and across Nigeria to intervene, stressing that a peaceful resolution is achievable through constructive dialogue.

He also stressed the importance of respecting court orders in resolving disputes.

He further urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to renew his efforts to mediate the crisis, despite previous challenges.

“President Tinubu has tried before, but he must not give up. Rivers State is too important for Nigeria’s economy and stability. The political ambition to control the state must not override the need for peace.

“You cannot rule over dead men. You cannot govern a war zone. First, there must be peace; then, leadership can function. I emphasise again, peace in Rivers State is not negotiable, and once it is restored, I believe the crisis will be resolved.”

With Rivers State being a key economic hub, Okiro’s call highlights the urgency of collective action to prevent further disruptions and ensure stability in the region.
