The Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, has ordered the immediate cancellation of the 2026 Egungun Festival across Ogbomosoland following security concerns triggered by alleged violent attacks and other acts of lawlessness linked to the celebration.

The annual festival, which began on July 8, was scheduled to end on July 19.

The cancellation was announced in a statement issued by the Palace Secretary, Mr. Toyin Ajamu, on behalf of the monarch.

According to the statement, the decision followed reports of attacks allegedly carried out by hoodlums during the festival, raising fears over public safety and the possibility of a breakdown of law and order.

The palace said the monarch took the decision in the interest of protecting lives and property, as well as preventing any unforeseen security breaches that could endanger residents and visitors across Ogbomosoland.

“The cancellation became imperative to forestall further disturbances and preserve the peace for which Ogbomosoland is known,” the statement said.

Oba Olaoye directed all law enforcement and security agencies to ensure strict compliance with the directive and maintain law and order across the affected communities.

The palace also urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and remain law-abiding, assuring them that the decision was taken solely in the interest of public safety.

Security agencies have, meanwhile, been directed to intensify surveillance and enforcement to ensure full compliance with the cancellation order and sustain peace throughout Ogbomosoland.
