The Surulere Local Council has pledged to make restitution following the unlawful demolition of the Deeper Life Bible Church at 33, Aina Street, Lawanson, Lagos.
Council Chairman Bamidele Sulaiman Yusuf made the commitment during a meeting with representatives of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Tayo Okufolati and the church’s Group Pastor, Alfred Ogene.
The meeting addressed the council’s defiance of a court order concerning a lawfully acquired property with complete documentation.
Pastor Bashiru Adesina, who oversees the Yoruba Church at the worship centre, expressed outrage over the overnight demolition of the 18-year-old church without prior notice, resulting in significant vandalism of church property.
The council reportedly began laying foundations for shops on the site immediately after the demolition. This prompted condemnation from church officials, who described the action as unjust and disruptive to their congregation, now left without a place of worship.
During the discussions, Ogene reiterated the church’s opposition to the demolition, which led to extended reconciliatory talks. Okufolati stated that while the church seeks peaceful resolutions, the council claimed ownership of the land and proceeded with demolition despite ongoing court proceedings and injunctions.
The Nigerian Police had directed all parties to collaborate on resolving the issue. Yusuf promised to consult with relevant authorities and provide an update within the week.
Representing the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Christian Nwogu highlighted that the incident transcends the Deeper Life Bible Church, emphasising the association’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of churches and ensuring the protection of religious freedoms.
