Two siblings have been burnt to death in the inferno that engulfed their apartment in Ode-Aye, Okitipupa Local Council Area of Ondo State, at the weekend.
The siblings, six-year-old Queen Ohwo and her four-year-old sister, Everlyne, were trapped in their apartment at Olaribigbe Street, the Zion axis of the community.
While confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Command disclosed that the victims, who were children of Mr and Mrs Peter Ohwo, died as a result of negligence.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP AbayomiJimoh, preliminary investigation revealed that the fire might have resulted from negligence during culinary activities .
Jimoh, who stated that the remains of the deceased children, had been evacuated to the health centre in Ode-Aye with their parents in deep shock and trauma following the incident.
He said, “Police operatives visited the scene promptly, where photographs were taken and necessary documentation carried out. CP Adebowale Lawal has ordered a thorough and discreet investigation into the incident to ascertain the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the fire outbreak.
“The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ode-Aye has been directed to cordon off the scene, obtain statements from relevant witnesses, and collaborate with the Federal Fire Services to determine the extent and origin of the fire.”
