UN marks 35th Int’l Day of Older Persons with focus on wellbeing, rights

The United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP) will mark its 35th anniversary on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, with global activities highlighting the rights, wellbeing, and contributions of the aged.

In Nigeria, the commemoration will be held in Abuja under the global theme, “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Actions: Our Aspirations, Our Wellbeing and Our Rights.” The theme underscores the pivotal roles older persons play in communities and the challenges they continue to face.

The Global Knights Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation, announced in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Ngozi John-Uyah, that it would lead the Nigerian observance. The group emphasised that the event will centre on advocacy, care, and protection of vulnerable persons.

The programme will feature a keynote address by Dr Musa Bawa, alongside a panel session addressing key issues affecting older persons. Panel discussants include: Mr Fred Ohwahwa, President, Just Friends Club of Nigeria, Dr Hajara Njidda Amoni, Director of Administration, Made in Nigeria Project Office Abuja, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Umma Umar Mohammed, Manager, Programmes, NTA HQs, Prince Emeka Kalu, RATTAWU National President and Dr. Ufuoma Omo-Obi, a global health professional & MD/CEO West and Central Africa Health Options Ltd/Gte.

The Abuja event is scheduled to hold at Suite 004, Sticks and Stones Plaza, 1245 Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Wuse 2, beginning at midday. The Foundation called on the media, development partners, and the public to support the commemoration by amplifying the voices of older persons and promoting their rights, wellbeing, and aspirations.
